This morning at swimming lessons, Girl jumped off the diving board and I FINALLY caught it on camera. She has been doing this for a month, and I just haven’t had the chance to catch it before on still image. Jumping off of the diving board is a milestone in my family. It is an achievement in self-confidence that each of us made around the same age as Girl, 4. While other kids in her class were timid, Girl hasn’t ever really succumbed to peer pressure. She always has loved the water. Once the lifeguard teaching her class is in place to catch her (or pull her up after she splashes down), she gets a huge grin on her face. “WATCH THIS!”, she yells to me, and off she goes. She speeds her way down the board and right off into the water. Then she comes right up and says, “LOOK, MAMA! DID YOU SEE?!”. Yep, Girlie. I saw. I saw my ladybug growing up WAY too fast. I saw her overcome the anxiety that could be caused by the drop into the water, turn it into something fun, and confidently leap into the water below. May you keep the confidence that you showed today for always. Someday, it will be tested. Just remember, I’m always here, watching, ready to help if you need me, or just to applaud when you make a big splash!
