Project52 2012 | Simple Values

Each week in 2012, I am going to challeng my creative self by taking, editing, and publishing a photograph each Friday. These photographs will each be purposefully shot to depict one of my core values. At the end of the year, I plan to publish these photos in a book that I can later use as a coffee table book, or night table book, to remind myself what really matters, when sometimes life becomes unclear.

woodpeckerWhen people talk to you, listen. Recently, my almost-four-year-old started talking about her friend the woodpecker that lives in our yard. Her imagination is WILD lately, so I just let it go in one ear and out the other. She would talk about how she woke up and saw it, or yell hello at random times during the day. I ignored it figuring her “woodpecker” would eventually go away. After all, how would my pre-preschooler know what a woodpecker looks like?! confidenceOn a recent trip to the zoo, I snapped the two photos below. One of my daughter and her friend, the other of an orangutan doing its thing. One shows true friendship, the other a quiet confidence and self-acceptance. I couldn’t decide which to use, so I posted both this week (one for last and one for this week since they were taken on Saturday). True friends are your chosen family. If you let them, they will save you from yourself. They will help you to remember who you are when you lose direction, because they know you, sometimes better than yourself. three kids on a benchEvery single day, every one of us grows and changes. Though the everyday alterations may be small, in the long term they add up. When you’re little, you’re in this big hurry to grow up and be a “big person” or “grown up”. Please, Boy, Girl, and Nephew Noah, take your time. Enjoy the freedom. Enjoy the lack of responsibility. Play. Smile. Laugh. Pass out hugs and kisses to everyone in your life. Learn. But don’t rush anything, because in reality, even grown ups don’t know what being a “grown up” really means.
