Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Captain America, Dora, Barbie, Little Einsteins, Scooby Doo… You name the problem, and there is a super hero out there to solve it. I don’t know where these people dream up their fictional characters, but they are pretty fantastic. Kids love them, and need them to bolster their imaginary world of security where the bad guys lose, and the good guys win. I like this imaginary world. In this world, the heroes make sense, and get recognized for their greatness.
In the real world, too often, the heroes get looked over. There are so many modern day heroes in service to their communities that deserve thanks. While I recognize that there are too many to mention in one email and give them any recognition worthy of their efforts, I’m going to raise a sippy cup to the one group that I think underestimates itself: The Mommies!
Like I have said before, Mommies are super heroes. It doesn’t matter if you’re a working mom, or stay-at-home, to your kids you are their world. You make them feel safe, even when there is chaos around them. You make the boogie men disappear, their growling stomach’s quiet with nourishment, put band-aids on their boo-boos, and stop the tears when their feelings are hurt with the squeeze of a good hug when no one else will do. You provide for them. You care for them. You protect them. That’s YOU. Don’t forget how big your job is. You’re more than just a mom. YOU are a super hero.
Even as an adult, when the fit hits the shan, I call in the big guns. My mom may not know what to do or say, but just knowing that she is on my side helps. I may live on literally the other end of the nation, but her voice can make me feel better when sometimes nothing else will. I’m lucky that way. I can only pray to do the same and be the same for my kids. My mom isn’t perfect, and neither am I. But we are perfect for our kids, and we do the best we can. Doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done, without giving it a second thought? Yep. Moms are super heroes.
